
Lions Place 9th at Doc Hosea Invitational

Varsity eight finishes second in Petite Final
CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Columbia women's rowing team began the 2019 season on Saturday at the Doc Hosea Invitational, where the Lions placed ninth out of 12 teams. The regatta took place at Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Columbia's varsity eight and second varsity eight crews each finished second in their respective petite finals. The varsity four was fifth in their petite final while the second varsity four did well enough in the morning prelims to earn a spot in the Grand Final, finishing sixth out of 12 boats overall.
The varsity eight was pitted against Dartmouth, Rhode Island, Boston University, Temple and UMass in their Petite Final. The Lions completed the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:54.34, besting URI by less than a second and Boston U. by about 2.5 seconds. Dartmouth squeaked out the victory with a time of 6:51.50.
The second varsity eight ran a similar race against the likes of Northeastern, Dartmouth, UMass, URI and BU. Again, the Lions took second place, this time edging the Big Green by a half of a second with a time of 7:02.18. Northeastern won the Petite Final with a time of 6:59 flat.
After the varsity four took fifth in their Petite Final while the second varsity four prepared for the Grand Final against Rutgers, Navy, Penn, Northeastern and Dartmouth. The 2V4 crossed the finish with a time of 8:13.34.
Rutgers won the regatta with 125 total points. The Lions finished ahead of URI, UMass and BU.
Columbia races at the Ivy League Invite next Sunday at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
