BRONX, N.Y. – Mike Smith netted a career-high 31 points, but Youngstown State used a blistering shooting performance in the first half to earn a 94-83 victory over the Columbia men's basketball team Friday on the first night of the Johnny Bach Classic, hosted by Fordham.
Smith becomes the first Lion (0-2) to record 30 or more points in a game since Nate Hickman against Army West Point in 2016 and the most for the program since Maodo Lo scored 37 at Princeton in 2015. The junior shot 12-of-23 from the floor and added five rebounds and four assists.
Kendale Hampton posted a career-high 32 points and was 7-of-10 from long range off the bench for the Penguins (2-2).
"We've got to sharpen up our defense," head coach Jim Engles said. "We played well (at the start), but we got caught up in their pace and played a little bit too fast. When a team goes on a run, we have to make sure we step up and prevent that next basket or next rebound or run our offense a little bit sharper to try and take control of the game again."
Columbia's offense was clicking early, thanks to seven quick points from Smith and a 9-0 run put the Lions in front, 12-4, five minutes in. The lead ballooned to 21-10 after Rodney Hunter dished to Randy Brumant for a layup with 11:33 remaining in the half before Youngstown State heated up.
The Penguins made four in a row from beyond the arc to quickly erase their deficit and take a 30-27 lead at the 7:32 mark of the period. YSU led by as many as nine in the frame after Hampton's fifth trey of the half with 3:30 to go in the period and took a 52-45 advantage into the locker room.
To start the second half, the Penguins quickened the tempo and continued to hit enough shots to remain in front by double-figures for the bulk of the frame.
Columbia outscored Youngstown State, 52-22, in the paint, but were just 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range. Quinton Adlesh added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Ike Nweke pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The Penguins were opportunistic on the glass, notching 21 second-chance points on 10 offensive rebounds. Naz Bohannon grabbed a game-high 13 boards.
The Lions will continue action at the Johnny Bach Classic Saturday, November 17, when they take on FIU at 6 p.m.
