Cross Country Claims a Pair of Second Place Finishes

Women Tie No. 20 ranked Indiana for first place as four Lions finish in top-10 led by Erin Gregoire's second place individual finish; Men finish in second led by Brian Zabilski's fifth place individual finish.
BRONX, N.Y.—Columbia claimed second place in the both men's and women's cross country races in the Iona Meet of Champions held Friday morning at Van Cortlandt Park.
In the team competition, Columbia's women's team tied for first place with No. 20 ranked Indiana with 30 points. The tiebreaker went to Indiana, who featured the race winner Katherine Receveur, who won the 6k in 17:30.8.
The top finishers for Columbia were seniors Erin Gregoire with a second place finish of 17:40.8 and Libby Kokes, who claimed fourth place with a time of 17:44.8. Also finishing in the field's top-10 were sophomore Alexandra Hays (fifth place, 17:48.0) and junior Katie Wasserman (eighth place, 17:50.7).
Columbia's men's team found equal success after its 8k race, finishing second out of 11 NCAA Division I schools participating in the event. Indiana won the team competition with 55 points, but the Lions totaled 67 for second place.
Seniors Brian Zabilski led the Lions with a fifth-place finish in 25:21.7 and senior Tyler Italiano placed eighth with a 25:34.0 time. Rounding out Columbia's top finishers were first-year David Vorbach (No. 15, 25:48.2) and sophomore Jonathan Lauer (No. 18, 25:55.0).
Next up on the schedule for the Lions is the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis. on September 28.
