Women's Tennis Closes Out Cissie Leary Invitational

Jennifer Kerr finishes as runner-up in Flight A singles draw, Yekaterina Alferova finishes as a semifinalist in Flight B singles.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Columbia women's tennis team closed out its weekend at the 22nd annual Cissie Leary Memorial Women's Tennis Invitational Sunday at the Hecht (Levy) Tennis Center on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Three Columbia players were in action on Sunday including sophomore Jennifer Kerr, first-year Yekaterina Alferova and sophomore Paulina Ferrari. Kerr advanced to the Flight A Singles final with a 6-0, 6-3 semifinal win over Princeton's Grace Joyce. She dropped the championship match to Penn's Iulilia Bryzgalova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. She earned a trophy for her performance. Alferova dropped a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 decision to Penn State's Sydney Weinberg in the semifinals of the Flight B Singles draw. She finished her weekend with a 3-1 record. Ferrari lost a 7-5, 3-6, 10-4 decision to Cornell's Valerie Ho in a pickup match.
On Saturday, Ferrari and Bhan won the Flight B Doubles title, Kerr advanced to Flight A Singles semifinal competition and Alferova improved to 3-0 on the weekend and advanced to semifinal play in Flight B Singles. Other Lions who impressed on Saturday included senior Sarah Hu and sophomore Christie Wan, who both went undefeated for the day in their respective brackets.
Columbia was one of four Ivy League schools competing in the invitational. Teams competing include Columbia, Cornell, Drexel, host Penn, Penn State, Princeton and Temple will be in University City for the weekend. Columbia sent seven players to the invitational including seniors Andrea Kevakian and Sarah Hu, sophomores Jennifer Kerr, Christie Wan and Paulina Ferrari and first-years Akanksha Bhan and Yekaterina Alferova.
