Women's Tennis to Compete at Two Different Events This Weekend

Five Lions qualify for the Riviera ITA All American; four players to compete at West Point Invitational.
MALIBU, Calif./WEST POINT, N.Y.—Two groups of Columbia women's tennis players will compete at two different events and venues this weekend. Five players qualified for the Riviera ITA All-American at Malibu, Calif., while four players will compete at the West Point Invitational at West Point, N.Y.
The five players who qualified for the Riviera ITA All-American include first-year Melissa Sakar and two doubles teams consisting of sophomore Christie Wan and senior Andrea Kevakian, along with first-year Akanksha Bhan and sophomore Paulina Ferrari. Top players from across the country will compete in the event. All five Lions will compete in pre-qualifying matches held at Pepperdine University which begin on Saturday, Sept. 29. Four players—junior Renee Ren, first-year Caitie Sullivan, sophomore Sarah Rahman and sophomore Brianna Williams—will compete in singles at the West Point Invitational. Individuals from 20 different schools will compete at the event including student-athletes from host Army West Point, Binghamton, Bryant, Colgate, Columbia, Connecticut, Fairfield, Fordham, Lehigh, Marist, Montana, NJIT, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis, St. John's, Stony Brook, Syracuse and Valparaiso. The invitational will run from Friday through Sunday at Malek Outdoor Tennis Center and Lichtenburg Indoor Tennis Center and will feature championship and consolation rounds.
