NEW YORK –
The Columbia men's soccer team looks to bounce back from a loss last Friday at No. 25 Fordham in the Ivy League opener at Brown.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions came out and competed fiercely last Friday, managing to put 15 shots up against a Fordham team that advanced to the 2017 Elite Eight, but were unable to capitalize on all of the pressure they created.
Francisco Agrest and
Kynan Rocks led the way for Columbia with three shots each, and
Dylan Castanheira and the back line did an excellent job in goal only allowing one goal on five shots. The game-winner for the Rams came in the first half, when Johannes Pieles connected with Janos Loebe on a run-out, and Loebe put a shot inside the far post from the right side of net for the score.
SEASON AT A GLANCE
Columbia sits at 3-2-1 after dropping its first contest since the season opener last Friday at Fordham. The Lions have out-scored opponents 7-4 this season, thanks in part to a 3-0 win over Binghamton on Sept. 10, led by a hat trick from Rocks.
Rocks, Agrest, and
Dylan Mott all have game-winning goals in 2018, while the five-goal scorers are rounded-up by
Vana Markarian and
John Denis, who have one each. In net, Castanheira has two shutouts to go with his 3-2-1 record and remains one shutout away from tying Gary Escher career school record of 23.
SERIES HISTORY
Winners of its last two meetings in the series, Columbia hopes to improve on a 16-35-6 career record with Brown. Powered by goals from Alex Banger,
Arthur Bosua, and Mott a season ago, the Lions posted a 3-0 shutout
of the Bears in the 2017 Ivy League opener.
ABOUT THE BEARS
Through seven contests, Brown has been a streaky team, winning its first two matches, then dropping its next three, before coming away with the last pair. The Bears were 1-0 winners in overtime against Rhode Island last Saturday, then topped Boston University on Tuesday on the road.
Junior midfielders David Schiller and Matthew Chow have been the productive this season in the final third, as Schiller leads the team in goals with three, followed by Chow with two.
UP NEXT
Columbia continues their five-game road trip at Pitt on Tuesday, Oct. 2nd before a match on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Penn.
