No. 5 Princeton Pulls Away Late; Tops Columbia 4-0

Senior Katie Dempsey stopped a career-high 16 shots, but the Tigers scored three goals late to come away with the win.
NEW YORK – After a nearly 60-minute defensive battle, No. 5 Princeton scored three times in the final 12:12 to come away with a 4-0 victory over the Columbia field hockey team. Reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week Katie Demspey turned away a career-high 17 shots and the Lions (6-4, 2-1) made two more team defensive saves in a strong all-around effort from the backfield.
"Once you're down 2-0, you have to start to play beyond your means to get a goal back," head coach Caroline Nelson Nichols said. "When you do that, you open yourself up for counter attacks and Princeton finished those opportunities. I don't think it was a lack of our ability to defend them over 70 minutes, I think it was us being aggressive as the clock was starting to tick down. Overall, I'm really proud of the team. The learning that is happening in the training environment and game-to-game really showed tonight."
Princeton (9-3, 3-0) maintained possession for much of the first half, but Dempsey came up with big saves and received an assist from Emily Maclean, who batted a ball away from the net out of midair off a rebound opportunity with just over 10 minutes left in the first half.
However, the Tigers broke through in the 32nd minute when Clara Roth scored on a second-chance opportunity after a corner. Julianna Tornetta's initial stop was knocked down by Dempsey, but the ball bounced right to the stick of Roth on the left side of the cage.
Columbia continued to limit Princeton's attack, aided by more strong play from Dempsey, until the 58th minute when Princeton capitalized on another corner. This time MaryKate Neff received the insert on the left wing and her shot found the stick of Elise Wong on the right to double the advantage.
Under two minutes later, Roth netted her second of the game by driving down the left end line through traffic and found the far side of the cage for her second of the night and eighth of the season. Neff capped the scoring in the 65th minute on a similar setup to the Tigers second goal. This time her shot from the top of the key went off a Lion stick and in.
The Lions are back in action Friday, October 12 at Penn for a 3:30 p.m. tilt. The game will be shown live on ESPN+.
