The Lions head to St. John's and Penn this weekend
NEW YORK-The Lions fencing squad heads on the road for two duel meets this weekend. First up, is the annual St. John's Super Cup on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday.
Columbia is coming off a 4-2 dual meet last weekend at the Penn State Invite. The Lions were victorious against Yale, Duke, Haverford, North Carolina, and Temple with the help of the strong Epee lineup. The Epee squad went undefeated overall at the meet, led by senior Elise Gout who got ahead of the competition.
St. John's Super Cup
St. John's Super Cup is one of the most important meets of the season. This event brings together six of the most distinguished fencing programs together to compete mid season. The attendees are Penn State, St. John's, Notre Dame, Harvard, Ohio State and Columbia. Of the 29 NCAA National Championship teams, this meet's attendees have won 28 titles.
Notre Dame is the defending NCAA National Champion and they hope to repeat this year. Columbia hopes to make it out on top this season, as they finished just behind the Fighting Irish last year in second place. Saturday's competition will preview the end of the season competition for the Lions.
Last year at the Super Cup, The Lions had a mixed finish. The women's squad finished 4-1 on the day, with returning fencers Iman Blow, Sylvie Binder and Ester Schreiber sweeping the foil competition 9-0. The men struggled finishing the competition 1-4.
Philadelphia Invitational
After Saturday's competition, Columbia, along with fellow participants at the Super Cup, Ohio State, St. John's and Notre Dame head down the New Jersey Turnpike for the Philadelphia invitational hosted by Penn.
The participating schools at the Philadelphia invite are Columbia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, St. John's, Wayne State and NYU. Last year, the Lions performed well. The women took home a perfect 6-0 record, and the men finished 4-1.
