The Lions won three matches in today's team loss to Cornell.
NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team was upended by Cornell, 30-10, today at the University Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Lions now sit at 4-2 on the season, as Binghamton enters the Blue Gym tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. dual.
Cornell struck first at 125, picking up four points with a major decision win, and following that up with a six-point forfeit at 133. First-year Danny Fongaro cut into that lead in the 141-pound bout, delivering a major decision to Noah Baughman, 8-0, and making the team score 10-4.
After back-to-back decisions by Cornell in the 149 and 157 pound matches, the Lions got a pair of their own wins at 165 and 174. Laurence Kosoy surged ahead with a third period takedown against Jake Brindley and tacked on a riding time point to win 4-1 at 165. Max Elling trailed Andrew Berreyesa 4-1 after the first period, but wore out his opponent while riding him out through the entirety of the second period, then grabbed a takedown and six total nearfall points in the third to win 10-4.
"I was actually feeling pretty good in the third period and saw he was a little tired and backing down a little bit, so I knew if I kept doing my thing and kept pushing a little harder I could break him," said Elling.
The final three bouts would go to Cornell by tech fall, fall, and a 5-0 decision, leading to the 30-10 win.
