The Columbia wrestling team will hit the Metro D.C. area with three duals in three days starting Thursday.
NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team will hit the Metro D.C. area with three duals in three days starting Thursday.
The Lions battle Cleveland State at 4 p.m. tomorrow, followed by a 7:00 p.m. match against George Mason, with both battles taking place in Fairfax, Virginia. On Saturday, Columbia takes on American also at 7:00 p.m., with live stats and a live stream available.
Season At A Glance
With a pair of dual matches under their belt, the Lions sit at 2-0, having also taken part in five invitational tournaments this year. Columbia opened dual season with a 27-12 win over VMI on Dec. 8, before beating Northern Colorado, 19-13, two days later.
At the midway point in the season, Laurence Kosoy leads the team in wins, going 14-5 at 165. The junior is 2-0 in dual matches, and won three matches with one pin during the Southern Scuffle. Senior Dan Reed is second on the team in wins at 13-3 and 2-0 in duals, as the senior posted four wins at 157 at the Southern Scuffle. Aside from the two upperclassmen, Max Elling (174), Riley Jacops (149), Matt Kazimir (133), and Mike Kelly (125/133) all have double-digit victories.
Cleveland State | Thursday, 4 p.m.
The Vikings have taken part in five duals and five open tournaments during the 2018-19 campaign, posting a 3-2 dual record. Cleveland State topped Otterbein and John Carroll in December, while also taking part in their own open tournament and the Lock Haven Classic.
Senior Armando Torres leads the squad in wins, going 22-7 overall at 133 including four falls, three tech falls, and four major decisions. Sophomore Nico O'Dor is second in wins, posting a 19-9 overall record at 157, with three pins to his name. Brady Barnett has been the most dominant wrestler in dual matches, not giving up a single point while scoring 23 in the 149-pound weight class.
Thursday's dual with between the Lions and the Vikings will be the first between the two programs.

Columbia and George Mason both last wrestled at the Southern Scuffle, going 1-1 in matches against each other. Kolby Ho fell to Dan Reed in the 157-pound bracket by an 8-3 margin, while Eli Spencer topped Sam Wustefeld, 10-0, at 197.
The Patriots sit at 4-2 in duals this year, defeating Gardner-Webb and Davidson in its last two on Dec. 20. Heavyweight Matthew Voss went into the Scuffle with a perfect 11-0 record, taking fourth place as the senior now is ranked No. 15 in the country. Tejon Anthony also has impressed this season, sitting at 12-6 in the 149-pound weight class.
The last time these two teams met was on Nov. 27, 2011, when the Lions improved to 3-0 against the Patriots in a 40-6 victory.
