Women's Rowing Competes in First Fall Regatta Saturday

Lions sending four eights to Head of the Housatonic
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's rowing team will open its fall schedule at the Head of the Housatonic on Saturday. The Lions will send four eights to Indian Well State Park in Shelton, Connecticut.
All four of Columbia's crews will compete in the Women's 8+ Collegiate Div. I flight. Columbia's varsity eight will be coxswained by senior Devon Bernsley. The crew's eight rowers will consist of seniors Liza Ray, Hailey Todoroff, Anna Beshlian, Nonie Thomas and Astrid Walker-Stewart, junior Samantha Stehley and first-years Elisa Luo and Sarah Closser.
"We are taking as many boats as we feel are prepared and moving well," third-year head coach Emerson Curry said. "Four eights make for a larger team than we typically take but this team is further along in their training and skill than any other team I've had here to this point. We have a good group of seniors and some freshmen that have come in and haven't had any trouble with the training. Our practices have been more competitive and it has made the practice environment more exciting."
In all, 10 Lions will make their collegiate debuts on Saturday racing in one of the four eights. Aside from Luo and Closser in the varsity boat, Michelle Drandell and Caitlin Walsh will row in the second varsity while Lulu Gebbie and Jackie Armetta will compete in the third varsity. Ashleigh Lackey, Georgina Seal, Phoebe Rossman and Sriya Dodda are the four rookies in the fourth varsity. However, Columbia's head coach expects all four of his crews to challenge one another for positioning."
"This year it seems we have a lot of trading places in practice," Curry went on to say. "Whoever can sustain the training over the next six months will determine who is in our top boats and who isn't. Everyone is pretty motivated."
