The No. 21 Columbia Cross Country women finished fourth overall, while the Lion men finished 11th overall at the NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regionals.
BUFFALO, N.Y. – With snow and ice covering the banks, the No. 21 Columbia Cross Country women and the Columbia men ran the NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regionals, hosted by Buffalo, with the Lion women finishing fourth (6K) and the Lion men (10K) coming in 11th, in a cold race on Friday, Nov. 15.
The race, which originally was to be run at the Audubon Golf Course, was moved to a road course on campus, which started and ended in the shadow of UB Stadium.
LION WOMEN DOUBLE UP THE TOP 10: Columbia entered the race as the defending Northeast Regional Champions, having won the race in 2018, and despite the team result, the Lions did have a pair of runners finish in the top 10, as senior Katie Wasserman and junior Allie Hays each posted top 10 finishes. Wasserman, who finished with a personal best 6K time of 19:36.2, crossed the line in sixth place, and that finish improves on her eighth-place finish she clocked in during the 2018 race.
As for Hays, she joined Wasserman in improving her finish from the previous year, coming in ninth with a PR time of 19:41.2, where in 2018 Hays crossed the line in 13th place. Columbia's next finish came with senior Bianca Alonzo finishing 34th with a PR time of 20:22.9, while behind Alonzo was sophomore Sofia Camacho (20:51.4 [PR]) who came in 54th and senior Emily Acker (20:53.6 [PR]) who crossed the line in 57th place.
BERG AND VASBINDER CROSS TOGETHER: Columbia's men, who came in ridding a strong performance at the Ivy League Cross Country Heps, unfortunately did not have the results they came in looking for, but nonetheless, the two top Lion finishers, senior Kenny Vasbinder and first-year Tyler Berg, crossed the line together. Vasbinder clocked a PR time of 29:42.6 to finish 36th overall, while Berg crossed with the same time, also a PR for the first-year, placing 37th overall.
Sophomore David Vorbach was the next finisher for the Lions, coming in 63rd overall (30:06.9 [PR]) while he was followed by junior Dominic Dyer (121st; 30:58.7[PR]) and sophomore Pat Bayeux (126th; 31:01.1[PR]).
WAITING GAME: The Lion women now wait until 5 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16, for the NCAA Cross Country Selection show to see if they will get an at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. The show will be streamed on NCAA.com and is free to watch.
