Jaimie McCormick broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth quarter to give Columbia a weekend sweep.
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Columbia field hockey team earned a 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. Jaimie McCormick netted the game winner five minutes into the fourth quarter to move the Lions to 5-3 on the season.
Columbia played stifling defense in the first half, limiting the Bobcats to just one shot through the opening 30 minutes. The Lions were able to control the possession game and drew a trio of corners, but could not break through until the 28th minute.
Allison Smith found space down the middle of the pitch and slipped a perfect pass to Jennifer Trieschman, who was cutting down the left side. Trieschman tucked in a shot between the goalkeeper and post for her fifth of the year to put the Lions in front, 1-0.
Quinnipiac (3-6) started the second half strong, generating a pair of corners and keeping the ball in its offensive zone. The Bobcats evened things up when a seemingly harmless pass got through the Lions' defense and went in off the stick of Valerie Perkins and into the net in the 36th minute.
Columbia responded with a strong finish to the third quarter. The Lions were awarded back-to-back corners and capitalized on the second one when Jaimie McCormick redirected Brooke Gasser's low shot from the top of the circle to put the Lions up for good.
The Bobcats tried to apply pressure early in the fourth quarter, forcing goalkeeper Alexa Conomikes to make a save. In the 50th minute, Quinnipiac had a goal overturned after a video review showed that Conomikes was interfered with to keep the Lions on top. From there, Quinnipiac only registered two more shots, both off target.
The Lions will jump back into Ivy League play Saturday, October 5, when they face Cornell. Game time is set for 12 p.m. in Ithaca. Fans can catch the action live on ESPN+.
