After 80 minutes of scoreless play, Cornell's Grace Royer posted the only goal of the skills competition to give the Big Red the win.
ITHACA, N.Y. – After 80 minutes of scoreless play, the Columbia field hockey team fell in a shootout to Cornell, 1-0 Saturday afternoon. The Lions outshot the Big Red, 15-10, but Cornell (5-2, 1-1) converted on one of its attempts and kept Columbia (5-4, 1-1) off the board in the skills competition.
The Lions led in most statistics on the day, putting six shots on goal and drawing 10 corners to Cornell's two. However, the game remained knotted a 0-0 after the end of regulation, and the teams headed to overtime.
Columbia put the pressure on early in the first overtime period, but Cornell settled in and kept the game even going into the second extra session. Cornell's Grace Royer found the back of the net in shootouts, and that would be all the Big Red needed.
Coming into the contest, Cornell and Columbia boasted two of the top offenses in the Ivy League, but the first half was a defensive battle with the teams combining for just four shot attempts.
The Lions were the aggressors in the second half and had an opportunity to put one through in the 40th minute when a shot by Emily Maclean which was blocked by Cornell keeper Maddie Henry. Columbia had another chance in the fourth quarter with a strike by Brooke Gasser that was saved by the Big Red keeper. The Lions had one last chance in the second overtime period, with a shot by Jaimie McCormick, which went wide of the net.
Columbia keeper Alexa Conomikes had two saves on the day, with 10 shots faced. Gasser and Jennifer Trieschman led the Lions with four shots apiece.
Columbia hosts No. 21 Albany Sunday, October 6. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Baker Athletics Complex. Admission is free. Fans can also watch the contest live on ESPN+.
