The Lions erased a 2-0 deficit with three goals in the second quarter to earn a victory in their season opener.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Columbia field hockey team erased an early two-goal deficit and came away with a 5-3 victory over Central Michigan to begin the 2019 season. Kelly McCarthy and Allison Smith each posted their first career goals and Jennifer Trieschman scored twice in the triumph.
The Chippewas applied the pressure early on and led 2-0 after the first quarter. Avery Periard opened the scoring with an unassisted goal to grab the lead in the ninth minute. Georgina Minta doubled the advantage in the 12th minute, finishing a feed from Alice O'Hagan shortly after a penalty corner.
Columbia started the second quarter with a corner and a pair of shots to start to swing the momentum in its favor and broke through in the 19th minute. McCarthy scooped up Brooke Gasser's rebound for her first career goal, cutting the deficit in half and just under two minutes later, Trieschman lit the lamp after receiving a feed from Kelsey Farkas to knot the score at 2-2.
In the 28th minute, the Lions used another corner to build their attack and Allison Smith notched the go-ahead score, putting Columbia on top 3-2 at the break.
After the break, the Lions continued on the attack and made it 4-2 when Emma Domich tipped in Maaike Blindenbach's shot off a corner for an insurance tally in the 38th minute. The assist was Blindenbach's second of the game.
CMU took advantage of its fourth corner of the day to make it a one-goal contest in the 50th minute. Alice O'Hagan found the back of the net. However, Columbia did not contest a shot the rest of the way and with the goalkeeper pulled for an extra attacker, Trieschman iced the game with six seconds left on the clock.
Trieschman's 17 career goals put her tied for ninth on Columbia's career list. Alexa Conomikes earned her first career start in goal and made three stops. Columbia is 1-0 to start a season for the first time since 2014
The Lions are back in action Sunday, September 8, when they take on No. 8 Iowa at 2 p.m. ET. BTN+ will air the contest. Click here to watch and to subscribe.
