Trieschman scored for the third time in two games and Conomikes makes 14 saves in a hard-fought decision.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – With the score deadlocked at 1-1 after three quarters, No. 8 Iowa scored twice in a span of 1:36 to come away with a 3-1 victory over the Columbia field hockey team Sunday afternoon. Jennifer Trieschman posted the Lions' (1-1) goal, her third of the season.
Alexa Conomikes did stellar work in goal, stopping 14 shots on the game. Columbia's defense was solid all around, limiting the Hawkeyes to just the three goals on 17 penalty corners and 33 shot attempts overall.
The Hawkeyes finally broke through in the 40th minute when an initial shot off a corner was blocked and came to Lokke Stribbos. Stribbos fired a shot from the right wing that ricocheted off the stick of a Columbia defender and sailed into the top portion of the net.
Moments later, Brooke Gasser hit a long ball to Trieschman down the middle of the field and into the scoring area. Her initial shot was redirected by an Iowa defender, trickled past the defender and into the open cage with the goalkeeper pulled off the line.
Just under six minutes into the fourth quarter, Iowa regained the lead on a penalty corner with Katie Birch's shot caromed off the defense into the top of the goal again. The Hawkeyes put the finishing touches on the win in the 54th minute when Birch's shot was stopped and came to Maddie Murphy, who buried the chance.
The Lions are back in action Saturday, September 14, against another ranked foe, No. 23 Boston University, in Orono, Maine. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
