Hernandez Sets School Record In 200m During Packed Weekend

Columbia Track & Field first-year Jahi Hernandez clocked a time 21.61 in the 200m to set the school record.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M./BOSTON/NEW HAVEN, Conn./STATEN ISLAND, N.Y – First-year Jahi Hernandez set a school record in the 200-Meter Dash at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, while at three other competitions Columbia Track & Field locked up five first place finishes in a loaded weekend for the Lions as they finished their final preparations for the Ivy League Indoor Track & Field Heps.
Columbia's top triple jumpers, senior Daniel Igbokwe and sophomore Kali Hatcher each posted top 10 finishes in the packed field at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, with Igbokwe leaping to fifth place and Hatcher finishing seventh at the tough event.
Hernandez clocked a time of 21.61 seconds to set the 200m school record, which had been previously held by sophomore Brodie Holmes, who first set the school record in 2019, before breaking his own record with a time of 21.78 in the heat before Hernandez in the same race at the Valentine Invite. Joining Hernandez in giving Columbia top finishes was first-year James Chung (60-Meter Dash), first-year Anna Jordahl-Henry (High Jump), first-year Tiffany Bautista (Triple Jump), junior Ben Poth (Pole Vault) and junior Jack Pihlkar (Weight Throw) who all collected first place finishes in their respective events in what was a packed and busy weekend for the Lions.
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN'S EVENTS): At the Don Kirby Elite Invitational (Albuquerque, New Mexico), Hatcher, taking part in a tough field, finished seventh in the triple jump, leaping 41-8.75/12.72m to give Columbia a top 10 finish at the competitive meet. While at the 14th Giegengack Invitational, Jordahl-Henry cleared 5-6.50/1.69m in the high jump to finish first in that event and Bautista collected her own title in the triple jump, leaping 38-6.00/11.73m to collect her first collegiate first place finish.
On the track, at the Fastrack National Invite in Staten Island, New York, first-year Tessa Green set a personal record in the 200m, clocking 25.07 to finish third. Columbia collected another handful of top five finishes at the Fastrack National Invite, with sophomore Brianna Hodges clocking 57.80 (fifth) in the 400-Meter Dash while sophomore Alex Rodman (2:16.98) finished second and first-year Cassidy Williams (2:18.14) crossed the line fifth in the 800-Meter Run.
The top five finishes continued in Staten Island, as first-year Angela Saidman (4:59.79) finished fourth and sophomore Linnaea Kavulich (4:59.79) crossed fifth in the One-Mile Run, junior Serena Tripodi (10:10.62) locked up a third place finish in the 3,000-Meter Run and in the 60-Meter Hurdles junior Lauren Micham finished third with a time of 8.72 to wrap up Columbia's top five finishes over the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN'S EVENTS): Igbokwe, taking part in the triple jump at the Don Kirby, gave Columbia a top five finish as he leaped 50-0.50/15.25m to finish fifth in a packed field at the tough competition. While Hernandez, on his way to setting a school record, finished 13th in the 200m at the Valentine Invitational.
On the field, at the Giegengack Invitational, Columbia got a pair of first place finishes when Pihlkar set a mark of 60-6.75/18.46m in the weight throw and Poth set a PR in the pole vault clearing a height of 15-3.00/4.65m to give Columbia its two first place finishes in the field.
At the Fastrack National Invite, Chung crossed the line with a PR time of 7.12 to take first in the 60-Meter Dash, and his seventh-place finish in the 400m was also a PR as he clocked a time of 50.65. The Lions got a handful of top 10 finishes at the Fastrack National Invitational to complete a solid weekend, with junior Gio Trejos (7.29) finishing seventh in the 60m and ninth (50.70) in the 400m, sophomore Dante Miller (7.03) coming in eighth in the 60m Invite, senior Troy Martig (22.78) crossing 10th in the 200m, sophomore Ian Irish (1:55.94) finishing seventh in the 800m, junior Owen Bishop (4:19.83) coming in seventh in the One-Mile Run and first-year Moe Abusway (8.40) finishing seventh in the 60-Meter Hurdles Invite.
