2/21/2020 8:37:00 PM | Track and Field
Columbia Track & Field locked up the top four slots in the men's pole vault, while collecting 14 top five finishes.
NEW YORK – A top four sweep in the men's pole vault, highlighted by a first-place finish from first-year Will O'Brien, and wins by juniors Terri Turner and Jackson Storey in the 800-Meter Run, along with a first-place finish in the men's high jump by sophomore Ernest Robertson, led Columbia Track & Field's solid performances at The Armory Last Chance Meet at The Armory on Friday, Feb. 21.
O'Brien, who cleared 4.75m to win, was joined by junior Ben Poth (second) and sophomores Tiber Seireeni (third) and Logan Rubasch (fourth) in sweeping the top four spots in the pole vault, while Robertson cleared a height of 1.85m in the high jump to snag first. Turner clocked a time of 2:13.66, while Storey crossed the line in 1:51.76 as Columbia, along with the first-place finishes, locked up 14 top five finishes on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN'S EVENTS): Turner's win in the 800m was strengthen by a collection of Lions finishing inside the top 10 as senior Emily Digman crossed the line with a PR time of 2:15.10 to finish third and first-year Cassidy Williams bested her previous PR, set in her last race at the Fastrack National Invite (Feb. 14), crossing the line in fourth with a time of 2:16.50.
In the 200-Meter Dash, first-year Rachel Marsh clocked a PR time of 25.18 to finish fourth, and much like her fellow first-year, Williams, Marsh bested a time set in her previous race, the only difference from Williams was that Marsh set her mark at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational (Feb. 14). First-year Angela Saidman clocked a One-Mile Run time of 5:02.44 to finish third and junior Samantha Marin came in fifth with a PR time of 5:04.87 to round Columbia's top five finishes.
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN'S EVENTS): O'Brien cleared 4.75m to take first, but he was not alone on the podium for Columbia as Poth cleared 4.65m for a second-place mark, Seireeni jumped 4.55m to finish third and rounding out the top four was Rubasch's mark of 4.45m to give the Lions a clean sweep of the top four spots in the pole vault. While in the high jump, Robertson secured another win in the field for the Lions, clearing 1.85m to finish first.
Storey's time of 1:51.76 in the 800m was the best finish on the track by a Lion, but in that same event, senior Jacob Caswell was right behind his fellow Lion, racing to his best time in the 2019-20 season finishing second in 1:52.49. Columbia's final top five finish on the track came from senior Vasilis Kopanas, as he clocked a time of 1:07.05 in the 500-Meter Dash to finish third overall.
