Columbia Begins Four-Game Ivy League Road Swing at Brown, Yale

Fifth-place Lions look to climb into top four approaching Ivy Madness

NEW YORK – Coming off its first Ivy League weekend sweep in nine years, the Columbia women's basketball team (13-8, 4-4 Ivy) heads to Brown (7-14, 1-7 Ivy) and Yale (15-6, 5-3 Ivy) for the first of back-to-back weekends on the road. Friday night's game in Providence is scheduled for 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday game in New Haven at 4 p.m.

OPENING TIPS
• Columbia defeated Dartmouth, 73-63, last Friday before earning an Ivy League weekend sweep in convincing fashion, taking down Harvard, 89-64. It was Columbia's first Ivy weekend sweep since 2011 and its first ever weekend sweep over Dartmouth and Harvard.
 
• Abbey Hsu was named the Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday. Hsu, the Ivy League Player & Rookie of the Week, averaged 25.0 points while shooting 55.2 percent from the field and 50 percent (10-20) from three last weekend. Hsu scored a career-high 31 points (11-15 FG, 6-9 3FG) in the victory over Harvard, which followed a 19-point performance vs. Dartmouth.
 
• Through eight Ivy League games, Abbey Hsu is averaging 20.4 points to top all league competition. Her 163 points are the most by any Lion through their first eight career Ivy League games in program history.
 
• Columbia leads the Ivy League in scoring at 71.1 points per game and is also tops in the Ivy League in 3-point percentage (.343) and assists per game (16.0). In league play, the Lions average an Ivy-best 73.5 points per game.
 
• Columbia's 4-4 Ivy League start is its best since 2010-11, when the Lions started 4-4 and finished 6-8.


QUICK NOTES
• Abbey Hsu leads the team in scoring (15.2) and ranks No. 7 in the Ivy League.
• Hsu is tops in the Ivy League in 3-point field goal percentage (.438) and is No. 3 among all NCAA freshmen.
• Sienna Durr leads the team in rebounding (6.1) and is second on the team in scoring (12.7).
• Janiya Clemmons is top 10 in the Ivy League in steals (38, 1.8/game) and assists (57, 2.7/game).
• Four Lions rank inside the top 12 in the Ivy League in blocks (Pratt, Davis, Kennedy, Durr)
• Janiya Clemmons (1.8) and Abbey Hsu (1.6) each rank in the top 10 in the Ivy League in steals per game.
• Columbia has shot better than its opponent in 15 of its 21 games.
• Columbia is 13-0 when holding the opponent to fewer than 70 points and 0-8 when opponent scores more.
• Columbia is 9-2 in day games and 9-3 on the weekend.
• Ten of Columbia's 13 wins have come when holding the opponent under 40 percent shooting.


EXTRAS FROM DARTMOUTH-HARVARD SWEEP
• Columbia's last Ivy League weekend sweep was against Brown and Yale, Feb. 4-5, 2011.
• Columbia's 89 points against Harvard tied for the most the Lions have ever scored against the Crimson.
• Columbia's 25-point margin of victory was its largest ever against Harvard.
• Hsu (31) and Durr (20) became the first two Lions this season to both go over 20 points in the same game.
• Columbia 57.1 field goal percentage vs. Harvard was the eighth-best in a game in program history.
• Columbia's 25 assists vs. Harvard marked the eighth time in the team's Div. I era they have had 25 in a game.
• Columbia has had 20-plus assists in a game five times this season.


NATIONAL HONORS FOR HSU
• Abbey Hsu was named the Tamika Catchings National Rookie of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) for the week of games ending Feb. 16. Hsu shot 55.2 percent from the field and 50.0 percent (10-20) from 3-point range to lead Columbia to its first Ivy League weekend sweep in nine years and its first ever weekend sweep over Dartmouth and Harvard. It marks the second year in a row a Lion has earned the USBWA's national rookie honor - Sienna Durr earned it in January of 2019 on her way to being named both Ivy League and Met Basketball Writers Association Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Hsu was named Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week.
 
 
GROWING UP
• Columbia has significantly improved in rebounding and blocked shots compared to last season. Through 21 games, the Lions rank 65th in the NCAA in rebounds (40.29), 74th in rebound margin (+4.2) and 69th in blocked shots (4.1). At the end of last season, Columbia was sitting 200th or worse in the NCAA in all three categories, including 339th out of 348 in blocked shots (1.6).
 

SCOUTING BROWN
• Brown (7-14, 1-7 Ivy) has lost eight of its last nine overall and three straight Ivy League games. Brown's lone Ivy win came against Dartmouth up in Hanover on Feb. 7 by a score of 83-71. The Bears rank 200th or worse nationally in 12 major statistical categories, including 316th of 349 in scoring defense (72.0) and 341st in 3-point defense (.366). Justine Gaziano heads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per game and 3-point percentage (.353). McKenna Dale also averages double figures at 11.9 points per game.


SCOUTING YALE
• The Bulldogs (15-6, 5-3 Ivy) have dropped three of their last four Ivy League games after starting the league season 4-0. Last weekend, they were swept at home by Princeton and Dartmouth, falling to the Tigers by 16 and suffering a narrow 53-51 defeat at the hands of the Quakers. Roxy Barahman scored a team-high 17 points in the effort against Penn and leads the team in scoring at 16.8 points per game. Camilla Emsbo (15.4) and Ellen Margaret Andrews (13.1) also average double figures scoring. Columbia will have its eye on Tori Andrews, who went 6-for-6 from 3-point range against the Lions three weeks ago to help the Bulldogs to an 85-60 win in New York City. Yale and Columbia have the Ivy League's top two scoring offenses.
