Lions to Host St. John's, Rhode Island in Friday Doubleheader

Columbia women's tennis enters matches riding a seven-match win streak with a perfect 7-0 February record.
NEW YORK—Riding a seven-match win streak, the Columbia women's tennis team will host both St. John's and Rhode Island in a doubleheader at Dick Savitt Tennis Center on Friday. The Lions play St. John's at 11:30 a.m., then take on Rhode Island at 4 p.m.
Columbia enters its week with a 9-2 overall record, including a perfect 7-0 record in February matches. The Lions are coming off a superb weekend which saw them defeat Fairfield (7-0), No. 25 Syracuse (4-2) and No. 34 Washington State (4-3)
Six Lions have reached double figures in singles victories including sophomore Melissa Sakar (21-2), sophomore Akanksha Bhan (16-8), first-year Michelle Xu (16-6), first-year Julia Haynes (16-3), junior Jennifer Kerr (15-7) and first-year Shivani Amineni (17-4). Bhan is the nation's No. 102 ranked singles player by the ITA. In doubles, Sakar has an 11-match win streak intact and a perfect 9-0 dual match record, Haynes has won nine straight and Amineni has won six straight. In doubles, the Lions are led by Bhan and junior Paulina Ferrari (12-7) and Kerr and Amineni (11-2).
St John's enters Friday's match with a 6-4 overall record, while Rhode Island is 3-3 on a three-match win streak.
In two weeks, Columbia will take its annual Spring Break Trip competition trip, this time to Miami, Fla. from March 14-21. The Lions will play Broward College (March 14) in a scrimmage, take on East Tennessee State (March 17), Florida International (March 19) and Florida Atlantic (March 21) before Ivy League play begins on March 28 vs. Cornell.
