Pat Healy wins individual title after playoff following a three-way tie for first place, Lions close out fall campaign with their second team title of the 2021-22 season.
WEST ORANGE, N.J.—Columbia claimed its second team title by 10 strokes and junior Pat Healy won his first career individual title Monday at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship hosted by Wagner. Contested at Montclair Golf Club, the teams played 27 total holes, including a full round of 18 and a nine-hole third round.
Columbia won the event by 10 shots as it powered to a first round 289 and concluded the day with a 146 in the nine-hole second round. The Lions combined for a 15-over-par 289-146-435 and finished ahead of second-place Monmouth at 25-over-par 300-145-445 and third place Fordham at 27-over-par 300-147-447.
Healy won the individual title after claiming a three-way playoff with teammate and first-year Wyatt McGovern and Robert Morris' Josh Nagy. The trio tied atop the leaderboard at two-over-par 107. It was a successful day all around for the Lions as Healy, McGovern and senior Daniel Core all finished in the top-10, while all seven Lions placed among the field's top-20 competitors.
The event marked Columbia's final invitational of the fall season and Columbia Head Coach Rich Mueller was pleased with the results.
"To be this far into the season with academics near their peak, I'm so proud of how deep this team dug to gut out some really consistent scores on a really challenging day," Mueller said.
Healy, competing as an individual, finished at 72-35-107. McGovern had another strong day as he fired a 71 in the first round and 36 in the second round for his 107. Core took seventh place at five-over-par 73-37-110, sophomore Nathan Han took 11th at six-over-par 74-37-111, and first-year William Sung finished in 11th place with a six-over-par 75-36-111. Next was sophomore DJ Francey, who finished in 18th place at eight-over-par 71-42-113, and sophomore Alvin Kwak, playing as an individual, finished in 18th place with a 71-42-113.
After posting its 289 after the first 18 holes, Columbia held a five-stroke advantage over second-place Robert Morris.
Columbia won its second team title of the fall season as it also claimed the season-opening Doc Gimmler Intercollegiate (Sept. 11-12). Healy became Columbia's first individual champion since Kwak claimed the UConn Collegiate Invite at GreatHorse on Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2019. The last time Columbia won two fall invitationals was in 2019. With one more invitational team title, Columbia would set a school-record for most championships in a season.
Ten teams including host Wagner, Columbia, Fairfield, Fordham, Hofstra, Manhattan, Monmouth, Robert Morris, St. Peter's, Seton Hall competed at the event. Montclair Golf Club is a par-70, 6,528-yard course.
