Lions Drop Close Bout At Binghamton, 19-16

Columbia Wrestling dropped an EIWA Friday night dual bout at Binghamton.

VESTAL, N.Y. — Columbia Wrestling (1-6, 1-4 EIWA, 0-2 IVY) fell in another close battle, dropping its Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association dual bout at Binghamton (6-9, 4-1 EIWA), 19-16, on Friday night at the Events Center.

"The Nation's Oldest Program" got wins from No. 28 Joe Manchio (125), Angelo Rini (133), Dominic Rossetti (149), Andrew Garr (157) and Nick Fine (174).  Included in those wins was a big 18-0 technical fall win for Garr, which became key bonus points for the Lions in their attempts to get the win.

For the Lions, it's the second dual bout where they have held the lead late, only to lose the final three bouts.  Columbia dropped a similarly close match at then-ranked No. 17 Lehigh (Jan. 14), where much like the action in Vestal, New York, the Lions split the dual five-five but failed to snag bonus points where they could and lost over the final trio of matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED: At 125 pounds the dual got underway, and in that match Columbia's Manchio got back on track, beating Nick Curley via a 9-4 decision.  The win for Manchio snapped a three-match skid for the Lion 125-pounder and it gave Columbia a quick 3-0 lead in the dual.

Following Manchio was Rini at 133 pounds, and he continued Columbia's quick start, taking his match against No. 30 Anthony Sobotker via a 5-2 decision.  It was Rini's first win over a ranked opponent of his career, and it took a late shot and score from Rini to lock up his ranked win, extending Columbia's lead to 6-0 in the dual.

At 141 pounds, No. 33 Ryan Anderson scored a late takedown to beat No. 16 Matt Kazimir via decision, 6-4.  It was Kazimir's first loss in four matches, and it gave Binghamton its first points of the dual, putting the score at 6-3.

The Lions quickly got back to their winning ways when at 149 pounds, Rossetti used a strong defensive stance, which led to late points, to beat Nick Lombard via decision, 6-2, giving the Lions a 9-3 lead.

It was in the next match that Columbia finally would get bonus points, when, for the first time since Dec. 7, 2019, Garr got himself a win via a technical fall when he dominated Logan Gumble en route to an 18-0 win.  Garr, from the opening whistle, was in control and during the third period he earned numerous four-point near fall tilts to pad his score and eventually secure the technical fall win, which put the score at 14-3 in Columbia's favor.

Binghamton got its first bonus points of the dual when at 165 pounds, Brevin Cassella beat No. 21 Joshua Ogunsanya via a major decision, 9-0.  The win put the score at 14-7, with four bouts left in the match.

Columbia got its final win of the dual at 174 pounds when Fine grinded out a 2-0 win via decision over Jacob Nolan.  It was a tight affair, but a scramble in the first round, which went Fine's way, would be the deference as Columbia extended its lead to 17-7 heading into the final three bouts.

Binghamton, unforutently for the Lions, would take the final three bouts which would help them find the team points they needed to win the dual.  It started at 184 pounds when Cory Day beat Jack McGill via a 6-4 decision to put the score at 17-10.

During the bout at 197 pounds, where Sam Wustefeld fell to No. 15 Lou DePrez via technical fall, 18-3, the Columbia bench was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct call, which cost the Lions a team point.  And following the bout at 197 pounds the Lions held only a slight lead, 16-15.

The final bout was at 285, where No. 20 Joe Doyle beat Danny Conley via a major decision, 9-0.  The win at 285 gave Binghamton the points they needed to wrap up the 19-16 dual bout win.
