Anna Zhang claims singles win for Columbia; Lions drop to 8-3 on the year.
HARRISON, N.Y.—The No. 46 ranked Columbia women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to visiting No. 45 ranked Iowa State Friday afternoon at LifeTime Westchester. The loss ends Columbia's three-match win streak and drops the Lions to 8-3 on the year, while Iowa State improves to 6-0 in dual matches.
Iowa State won two doubles matches to take a quick 1-0 lead. Ange Oby Kajuru and Chie Kezuka won a 6-1 match over Columbia's Winta Tewolde and Shivani Amineni at No. 3 doubles, then Iowa State's No. 37 ranked team of Miska Kadlekova and Sofia Cabezas defeated CU's Clarine Lerby and Sophia Strugnell 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Iowa State went up 3-0 with back-to-back singles wins at No. 3 and No. 1 respectively. Kadlekova won a 6-2, 6-2 match over Columbia's Jennifer Kerr at No. 3 singles, and No. 50 ranked Thasaporn Naklo earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Columbia's Akanksha Bhan at No. 1 singles.
Trailing 3-0, the Lions battled back. Anna Zhang rallied for a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Iowa State's Ange Oby Kajuru at No. 2 singles. Three matches remained at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles. All three went deep into the third set, but Iowa State's Chie Kezuka won a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles to end the comeback.
Columbia was informed earlier this week that they had earned a No. 46 rating in the latest ITA national rankings. According to Wednesday's poll, the Lions have the opportunity to defeat eight more ranked teams later in the year including Miami, Fla. (15), Michigan (16), Old Dominion (22), San Diego (31), Princeton (43), Michigan State (60), and Washington State (65). Columbia and Princeton are the only two ranked Ivy League teams.
No. 46 Columbia is back in action on Sunday when it hosts No. 65 ranked Washington State at 11 a.m. at LifeTime Westchester.
