No. 46 Lions Win 4-2 Match Over No. 65 Washington State

Lions win doubles point, Jennifer Kerr, Julia Haynes, and Melissa Sakar claim singles matches in Columbia’s first win over a nationally ranked team.
HARRISON, N.Y.—The No. 46 ranked Columbia women's tennis team claimed a 4-2 win over visiting No. 65 Washington State Sunday afternoon at LifeTime Westchester.
The win improves Columbia's overall record to 9-3 on the year, while Washington State improves to 4-6 in dual matches. The win was Columbia's first against a nationally ranked team on the year as the Lions improve to 1-2 vs. rated teams.
Columbia took an early lead as it claimed the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. Anna Zhang and Winta Tewolde defeated Washington State's Elyse Tse and Savanna Ly-Nguyen at No. 3 doubles, WSU's Fifa Kumhom and Yang Lee won a 6-4 decision over Shivani Amineni and Rachele Rimondini at No. 2 doubles to even the score. But Columbia's Akanksha Bhan and Melissa Sakar defeated Michaela Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy 6-4 at No .1 doubles for a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Columbia maintained its lead throughout. At No. 5, Julia Haynes defeated WSU's Yang Lee 6-1, 6-2 for a 2-0 lead. After Baylerova defeated Bhan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to cut Columbia's lead to 2-1, the Lions' Jennifer Kerr claimed a decisive 6-4, 6-2 win over WSU's Maxine Murphy.
Washington State made it 3-2 with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles by Ly-Nguyen over Anna Zhang. Columbia's Sakar clinched the win for the Lions with a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles over Murphy.
No. 46 Columbia is back in action on March 12-13 when it travels to Michigan to face back-to-back nationally ranked teams in Michigan State (March 12) and Michigan (March 13).
