Columbia (10-5) plays its fifth consecutive nationally ranked opponent; Jennifer Kerr, Julia Haynes and Michelle Xu all secure singles wins.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. —The No. 38 ranked Columbia Women's Tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to host and No. 40 ranked San Diego Friday afternoon at San Diego's Hogan Center. The loss drops Columbia to 10-5 on the year as it opens Ivy League competition next Saturday. San Diego improves to 9-3 on the year.
San Diego captured the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. C. De Las Heras and Elizabeth Goldsmith won a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Columbia's Akanksha Bhan and Melissa Sakar. Then Anna Zhang and Winta Tewolde claimed a 6-3 win at No. 3 of USD's Abigail Desiatnikov and Jessi Muliat. But San Diego's Solymar Colling and Jordyn McBride defeated Columbia's Rachele Rimondini and Shivani Amineni in a hard-fought 7-5 decision.
The Toreros went up 3-0 when Colling (No. 78) won a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Columbia's Akanksha Bhan (No. 121) at No. 1 singles and Goldsmith claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Columbia's Anna Zhang.
Columbia's Jennifer Kerr put the Lions on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over USD's Desiatnikov (No. 125) and Columbia's Julia Haynes cut the Lions' deficit to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 over De Las Heras.
But the host Toreros clinched the close victory when McBride won a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 4 singles over Columbia's Sakar. Columbia's Michelle Xu made it 4-3 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No .6 over USD's Victoria Kalaitzis.
Columbia opens Ivy League play on Saturday, March 26 vs. Cornell.
