Henderson tabbed Rookie of the Year; Hsu, Davis land on All-Met teams
NEW YORK — The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association announced its Women's Div. I All-Met teams and awards on Friday. Columbia's Kitty Henderson was named Rookie of the Year, while sophomore Abbey Hsu was tabbed First Team and junior Kaitlyn Davis landed on the Second Team.
This marks the first time Columbia has placed more than one player on the All-Met teams. The Met Basketball Writers Association encompasses 21 New York City Metropolitan area schools across NCAA Div. I. Those schools include Army West Point, Columbia, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Hofstra, Iona, LIU, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, NJIT, Rider, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, St. Francis, St. John's, Saint Peter's, Seton Hall, Stony Brook and Wagner.
Henderson 's All-Met Rookie of the Year selection marks Columbia's third consecutive season with a player taking home the honor – Abbey Hsu (2019-20), Sienna Durr (2018-19). The first-year out of Australia played in all 32 games, starting the last 23, averaging 8.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 41.4 percent from the field. Henderson ranked top 25 in the Ivies in scoring, top 20 in rebounding and 11th in assists. She was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on two occasions (Nov. 15, Jan. 24), one which came after scoring a season-high 18 points in a home win over Cornell.
Hsu followed up her 2019-20 All-Met Rookie of the Year and Third Team selection by being named to the First Team. The two-time All-Ivy League selection out of Parkland, Florida averaged a team-leading 16.4 points per game through Columbia's historic 25-7 campaign. In doing so, she went 108-for-288 from 3-point range, ranking top five in the NCAA in attempts, makes and makes per game. Her 108 threes also set new Columbia and Ivy League single-season records. Hsu's 3-point percentage was No. 2 in the Ivies this season and also ranked No. 2 in the NCAA. She was a two-time Ivy League Player of the Week, scoring in double figures in all but four games and reaching the 20-point plateau nine times.
Davis' All-Met selection is the first of the junior's career. The 2021-22 First Team All-Ivy honoree stuffed the stat sheet all season long, averaging 13.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks. Davis led the Lions in rebounds, steals and blocks, ranking No. 3, No. 9 and No. 4 in the Ivies in each of the three categories, respectively. Her 267 total rebounds were among the top 75 in the NCAA and etched Davis' name at No. 6 in Columbia's single-season records. The double-double machine recorded nine such outings, including three straight double-doubles in wins over Cornell, Brown and Penn to move the Lions to 5-0 in the Ivy League.
The All-Met teams will be honored at the 89th MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner on Monday, April 25, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York.
