Walker Scores Twice as Lions Blank Wagner

First career shutout for Wimmer

NEW YORK Maya Walker recorded her first two goals of 2022, propelling Columbia field hockey (2-3) to a 2-0 victory over Wagner College (3-3) on Saturday afternoon.

Katie Wimmer was a brick wall in the cage, stopping everything that came her way. The sophomore from Windham, N.H. tallied seven saves in the first shutout of her collegiate career.

It was a defensive battle throughout the first two quarters. Wimmer saw six shots in the first 30 minutes of action. The teams went into the break even at zero.

Wagner outshot Columbia in the third quarter but the Lions defense did not break. The Seahawks were awarded three corners in the final five minutes of the quarter but could not find the back of the net.

The Lions were granted a penalty stroke nearly four minutes into the fourth quarter. Walker capitalized on the opportunity, beating the Wagner keeper in the lower left corner.

The insurance was added in the last minute of play. The Lions were awarded a penalty corner. MK Myklebust found Walker, who then played it to Sarah Considine, who passed it back to Walker for a slick give-and-go goal.

Next up, the Lions travel to Harvard on Friday, September 23 for a meeting with the Crimson at 4:00 p.m.
