Lions get underway Friday against the Dukes at 3 p.m.; then travel to Delaware Sunday
HARRISONBURG, Va. — Columbia field hockey begins its 2023 campaign on Friday against James Madison at 3 p.m. from the JMU Field Hockey Complex.

Season Opener Success
Columbia has won three-straight season openers, dating back to 2019. The Lions have earned victories over Central Michigan, Davidson, and LIU to start the last three seasons.
Wimmer to Attend U-21 Junior Women's National Team Selection Camp
USA Field Hockey announced in July that Columbia goalkeeper Katie Wimmer was selected to attend the U-21 Junior Women's National Team Selection Camp. The U-21 Junior Women's National Team Selection Camp will take place in January 2024, with specific timings and location to be determined.
Familiar Face
Columbia assistant coach Kristen O'Rourke returns to face her alma mater, JMU. As a member of the Dukes field hockey program, she earned JMU Athletic Director Scholar-Athlete honors as a senior. As a junior, the goalkeeper contributed to a JMU team that finished first in the nation in goals against average and shutouts per game.
JMU's Status
JMU enters its home opener at 1-1, following a win over William & Mary in the season opener and a loss last Sunday to Richmond. Azul Covarrubias leads the team with two goals in the first two games. Goalkeeper Brandelynn Heinbaugh has 18 saves and has allowed five goals.
Series History - JMU
The Lions and Dukes meet for the second time ever on Friday. Columbia won the lone matchup, 2-1, in 2013.
Delaware's Status
The Blue Hens enter this weekend at 1-1 with a home contest against Villanova on Friday before hosting the Lions on Sunday. Kiki Oudshoorn leads the team with three goals and six points.
Series History - Delaware
Columbia is 1-4 all-time against the Blue Hens. The two teams met last season, where Delaware earned a 3-1 victory in New York. Columbia's lone win in the series came in 2014.
The Schedule
The Lions' 16-game slate in 2023 includes seven home contests at the Columbia Field Hockey Complex. The 2023 campaign features opponents from seven different conferences and three opponents (Delaware, Rider, and Princeton) that appeared in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Columbia opens with three-straight games on the road before its home opener against Lafayette on Sunday, September 10 at 12 p.m. Ivy League play opens Friday, September 15 when Columbia hosts Cornell at 6 p.m.
Columbia's final home game of 2023 is against Yale on Friday, October 20 at 6 p.m. The regular season wraps up with road matchups at Dartmouth on Saturday, October 28 at 12 p.m. and at New Hampshire on Sunday, October 29 at 1 p.m. The Ivy League Tournament is scheduled for Friday, November 3 and Sunday, November 5 with times and location to be determined.
The Coaching Staff
Head coach Katie DeSandis enters her third season at the helm of the Lions. She will be assisted by Kristen O'Rourke (second season) and Abby Carpenter (first season).
The Roster
Columbia's 2023 roster features 10 returning players (three seniors, five juniors, two sophomores) and five newcomers. The Lions' returning group includes Maya Walker, who earned All-Ivy League Second Team honors last year, and Lindsey Yu, who earned Honorable Mention.

"It is with great anticipation and excitement that we welcome these five student-athletes into our Columbia Field Hockey family," DeSandis said. "Our newest additions bring talent, discipline, and commitment to a core group of returners ready to incorporate them into the standards of our program. With an incoming group that embodies our values and is eager to learn and reach new heights, I have no doubt that they will make an immediate impact as we drive each other and this program forward."
The Captains
Columbia field hockey head coach Katie DeSandis announced Sam Petrucco and Lindsey Yu as the program's 2023 captains.
"Sam and Lindsey are the embodiment of Columbia field hockey's vision, mission, and values," DeSandis said. "They champion this program in ways that both bond us around who we are while simultaneously pushing us to who we want to be and where we want to go as a program. I look forward to seeing them inspire this team to be their best for each other on and off the pitch."

Columbia was picked to finish seventh in this year's preseason Ivy League Poll.
