Lions shutout for first time this season
NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey was blanked by VCU, 2-0, on Pride Day Sunday at Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer kept Columbia (2-4, 0-1) in the match with eight saves but Columbia was unable to find the back of the net against VCU's defense. Columbia mustered 11 shots with seven coming on goal. Maya Walker and Lindsey Yu each recorded a pair of shots on goal, while Sophia Abate tallied a career-high three shots on frame.
VCU (5-2, 0-1) netted both goals in the first quarter. Both came off the stick of Morena Macera, who scored her third and fourth goals of the season. Macera's first goal came with 5:14 remaining in the opening frame off a penalty corner. Luisa Fasold was credited with the assist.
Macera then added another goal almost four minutes later on a backhanded attempt that got by Wimmer to make it 2-0.
The Lions offense produced several scoring chances but couldn't get anything past Rams goalkeeper Sheridan Messier. Columbia had five penalty corners and drew four cards on VCU.
Sunday's game was Pride Day as Columbia warmed up in special t-shirts that featured a rainbow Columbia logo. Pride bracelets were handed out to spectators and staff at Columbia Field Hockey Complex. Click here to watch members of the Columbia field hockey team discuss Pride.
