The Lions are back at it on Saturday, competing at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh in Pennsylvania. The 49th iteration of the event will once again be one of the largest in the country, featuring 450 college and high school teams with a combined 5,515 entries. Last year, the women finished 25th in the event, while the men finished 31st, and Columbia will be trying to improve upon that placement this year. The Lions head to Connecticut to take on Northeast Conference member Fairfield following a home match with Penn on Friday afternoon. Columbia is 12-5 all-time against the Stags and has won six of the last seven contests against Fairfield. The last five matches between the two teams have been decided by one goal. Columbia earned a 2-1 victory in the most recent meeting in 2021 at Fairfield. The Lions will look for their second road win of the season on Sunday.
In last Sunday's thrilling 1-0 victory over Rider, captain Lindsey Yu netted her second game-winning goal of the season. Goalkeeper Katie Wimmer and Columbia's defense battled rainy and windy conditions to earn the team's first shutout of the year. Heading into Friday's match with Penn, Yu leads the Lions in points (11) and is tied for the team lead in goals (4) with Mckenzie Bloom. Yu is also tied with Anabelle Brodeur for the team lead in assists with three.
After hosting Harvard this Saturday for an Ivy League contest, the Lions (2-3-2, 0-1-0 Ivy) will be hitting the road for a midweek non-conference duel against NYC neighbor St. John's (4-3-2, 0-1-1 BIG EAST). Entering this weekend, the Lions have seen much success at home (2-0-1) but are still in search of their first victory on the road (0-3-1). Tuesday will mark the fourth consecutive competition season that Columbia and St. John's will go head to head. The Lions came away victorious last year at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, 1-0, on a 27th-minute goal by Joao Lima. The victory improved Columbia's all-time series record over the Red Storm to 8-3-0.
