Sophomore from Florida recognized in Compound U21 Women
MEDELLÍN, Colo. — Columbia University archery sophomore Sydney Sullenberger has been named an Americas 2023 Best Archer of the Year Award winner in the Compound Under 21 Women's category. The World Archery Federation announced all of its Americas 2023 award winners last week.
"It is an absolute honor to receive this prestigious award from the World Archery Federation," Sullenberger said. "The past three years on the national and world circuit have been an amazing ride and this recognition makes all of the hard work I've put into training and competing so special. This was notably the best season of my career thus far. I am eternally grateful for all the trials and successes that emerged from the 2023 season, which ultimately allowed me to perform to this standard."
Sullenberger had a dominating 2023 season in both the collegiate and world ranks. Her collegiate success began with a gold medal in her Columbia debut last January at the Easton Youth & Collegiate Trophy Tournament. She tied for silver at USA Indoor Nationals, broke the qualifying record at the Arizona Cup (687) on her way to bronze and won gold at USA Archery Collegiate Target Regionals in April. She was also named to the 2023 All-East team, determined by individual scores from USA Indoor Nationals and Collegiate Target Regionals. She concluded the collegiate season by being named an All-American at Collegiate Target Nationals.
"Sydney's success is a continuation of the depth and opportunities the CU Archery program has to offer," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "I speak for myself, as well as the entire team, when I say we are thrilled for Sydney and to have her as a member of our family. This award is among archers from Canada to Argentina. It's a big deal when you are recognized on a world level like this and she's absolutely earned it."
Sullenberger's success continued into the summer, first qualifying for World Archery Youth Championships as a member of Team USA. She went on to win a gold medal at the event in Limerick Ireland, edging out Turkey's Hazal Burun, 140-138, in the championship round to earn a spot at the top of the podium. A week later, she won the national championship at the 2023 USA Archery JOAD Target Nationals. The native of Brandon, Florida earned a 1,376 total score in the U21 compound women's qualifiers. In the elimination round, Sullenberger posted a total score of 147 to take the gold medal and cap off a successful showing at the event.
Based on all of the success she had in 2023, Sullenberger was named to the United States Archery Team in December. This is her second straight year as a member of the U21 Compound Women's Team.
The Lions compete later this week at The Vegas Shoot, which runs February 1-4 at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
