Field Hockey Clinches Ivy League Tournament Berth with 4-1 Win Over Dartmouth

Three second-half goals broke a 1-1 tie to send the Lions to the postseason

NEW YORK — The Columbia field hockey team is headed to the Ivy League Tournament for the first time after a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth on Sunday morning. The Lions (6-9, 3-4) broke a 1-1 deadlock at the end of the third quarter and tacked on two more in the fourth to earn the No. 4 seed.

Lizzie Adams scored the game-winner in the 45th minute and posted an assist. Delfina Gonzalez Lobo scored the opening goal of the game and added an assist. Senior Katie Wimmer made six stops, all in the first half, to earn the win in net.

Columbia opened the scoring just 1:16 into the game after capitalizing on a penalty corner. After starting the play on the insert, Gonzalez Lobo scooped up a rebound off an Adams shot to make it 1-0.

Wimmer came up with a handful of clutch saves to keep the Lions in front early on, but the Big Green (3-13, 0-7) broke through when Amelie Luessmann tipped in a centering feed from Gabriela Braceras in the 24th minute to knot things up at the half.

From there, the Columbia defense did its part by holding Dartmouth to one shot attempt in the second half. The Lions took the lead for good when Lily Baker fired a hard shot outside of the circle, which found Adams' stick in front to make it 2-1.

Lindsey Yu added an insurance goal with a wicked shot that found the top-left corner on a penalty corner in the 50th minute. Sophia Abate put the finishing touches on the win, chipping in a loose ball from close range in the 59th minute.

Before the game, the Lions honored seniors Yu, Jeannine Turgeon, Grace Hecht, Baker and Wimmer, who played their final game at the Columbia Field Hockey Complex.

Columbia will face the hosts and No. 1 seed Princeton on Friday, November 8, at 11:30 a.m. at Bedford Field.
