NEW YORK – Columbia used seven bout victories, including three pins to post a 32-10 dual victory over Hofstra on Saturday afternoon inside the University Gymnasium.
Columbia improves to 2-2 in dual matches this season with the win Saturday. The Lions capitalized on bonus points as
Joe Curtis,
Vincent Mueller and
Kai Owen all earned wins via fall.
Jack McGill earned a tech fall victory, while
Nick Fine,
Sulayman Bah and
Richard Fedalen secured decision victories.
"It was a solid effort from the team today," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzlaff said. "The final exam period ended yesterday and we are proud of the way they all managed their academics this week while focusing in on the competition. Bonus points are always exciting and we continue to score and pin. This will be critical down the stretch. It was great to see
Nick Fine back in the lineup and he won a smart tactical match. We look forward to him and the team improving and getting healthy for the 2nd half."
Saturday's dual got started at 165 pounds where former Lion
Kyle Mosher claimed a 4-1 decision win over 27
th-ranked
Cesar Alvan. Mosher's win was just one of three bout wins of the day for Hofstra.
McGill earned Columbia's first victory of the day with an 18-3 tech fall against Matthew Waddell at 174 pounds. McGill's win was the first of five straight Columbia bout wins.
No. 30
Nick Fine found himself in a battle against 27
th-ranked Ross McFarland in the 184 bout. A key reversal in the second period proved to be critical as Fine outlasted McFarland in a 3-2 decision.
Curtis stepped into the dual lineup for the first time this season and impressed with a quick pin at 197. Curtis defeated Nikolas Miller in just 1:49 to extend the Columbia lead. Mueller also made some noise in the heavyweight bout as he pinned Danny Church in just 47 seconds to post back-to-back Columbia pins. Bah secured Columbia's fifth straight bout win with an 8-2 decision over Teague Strobel at 125 pounds.
The Lions split the final four bouts of the dual. No. 30 Owen and No. 32 Fedalen picked up the final two bout victories of the day for the Lions. Owen defeated Guage Shipp via fall in 2:06 for the third Columbia pin of the dual. Fedalen got past Noah Tapia in an 8-6 decision.
Boris Witmer dropped a major decision to Chase Liardi in the 133 match.
Dominic Rossetti was edged out by Jurius Clark in a 5-4 decision at 157 to close the dual.
