Palfrey, Sheets, and Lazits will comprise the leadership committee this season
NEW YORK — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti has announced Griffin Palfrey, Joe Sheets, and Anton Lazits as the program's captains for the 2025 season.
"I think this is one of the best senior classes on and off the field I have ever had at Columbia," Boretti said. "Griff, Joe and Anton are great selections to be captains by their peers."
Palfrey was a captain last season, appearing in 35 games and making 32 starts. He was a First Team All-Ivy League selection as a second baseman, Second Team All-Ivy League selection as a utility player, and a DI All-ECAC Team selection. Palfrey also garnered Second Team NCAA Div. I Northeast All-Region. The Vancouver, B.C. native received the Lou Gehrig Co-MVP award and Mr. Hustle award in 2024. Palfrey had a team-high .380 batting average, which ranked third in the Ivy League.
Sheets also served as a captain last year, appearing in 13 games and making all 12 of his starts. He was First Team All-Ivy League selection and Joseph Allen award recipient. His .207 opponent batting average in league play ranked fourth. Sheets surrendered just one home run to Ivy League hitters, which tied for a conference-best mark. The Wilmington, Delaware native also recorded 48 strikeouts in 55 innings of work.
Off the field, Sheets is a member of the inaugural Lou Gehrig Community Impact Team and was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team for the second straight year.
Lazits was one of two Lions to appear in and start all 44 games in 2024. He was a Second Team All-Ivy League selection for the third straight year. Lazits' 54 runs scored were a team-best and left him two shy of tying the single-season program record. The Pittsfield, Massachusetts native had a .969 fielding percentage and committed just two errors.
