Phoebe Anderson Breaks 3000m Record at Husky Classic

Lions compete in three meets across three different states over the weekend
NEW YORK — The Columbia indoor track and field team participated in three different meets spanning three different states over this past weekend. Part of the team traveled to Boston for the BU Valentine Invitational which spanned Friday and Saturday, while the rest of the team stayed local, partaking in the Fastrack National Invite on Friday afternoon at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island. Meanwhile, a contingent of distance runners traveled out to Seattle to take part in the Husky Classic at the University of Washington.
The story of the weekend came from Seattle, where Phoebe Anderson continued her historic season. The junior distance runner shattered another Columbia record, this time in the 3000m run, taking ninth place in the event with a time of 8:59.70. Anderson became the first Lion to ever break 9 minutes in the 3000m, while clocking the third fastest time in the history of the Ivy League in the process.
Also at Washington, Elia Ton-That placed 14th in 5000m run, finishing with a time of 15:46.13 which was the second fastest time in Columbia history and the sixth fastest time in Ivy League history. Additionally, on the women's mile, Nikki Vanasse took eighth with a time of 4:36.60 which was also second all-time at Columbia and seventh all-time in the Ivy League.
Back home at Ocean Breeze, Obiora Okeke continued his string of stellar performances in the shot put, taking first with a mark of 17.68m. Other standouts for the men include Talha Syed who took fourth in the mile with a time of 4:05.43 and Simon Skoumal who secured second in the weight throw with a mark of 17.10m
For the women, Zariyah Braxton was the star of the show after claiming first place in the triple jump with a mark of 5.12m. Leanna Johnston (9:45.36), and McKinlee Morris (13.16m) both earned second place finishes, in the 3000m and shot put, respectively.
Meanwhile, in Boston, Devon Davey had the top placement for the men with a fourth-place finish and time of 47.36 in the 400m dash. For the women, Tess Darnell had the top placement with a 37th place finish and time of 56.68 in the 400m dash.

With the Lions' indoor regular season now over, Columbia will prepare for the Ivy League Indoor Championships, which will be held from February 24-25 in Boston, Mass.
