LAST TIME OUT
The Lions closed out their 2024 outdoor regular season last weekend at the Penn Relays and Yale Springtime Invite. Many Lions had strong performances that they hope to carry into Outdoor Heps this weekend.
The highlight of the weekend came from the Penn Relays, where the Lions' Distance Medley Relay team set a new program record with a time of 11:00.38. The team consisted of Nikki Vanasse, Kennedi Poullard, Olivia Schmitt, and Phoebe Anderson. This time was also the third fastest in Ivy League history.
In the Yale Springtime Invite in New Haven on Sunday, Zuriel Jimenez led the way for the women with a first place finish in the javelin throw thanks to a mark of 33.15.
Parker Kim highlighted the men's team with a first place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.31.
Meanwhile in Philadelphia, Yoosang Kim was the highest finisher of the weekend with a fifth place finish in the college shot put with a mark of 16.73m. In the championship shot put, Obiora Okeke finished 13th with a mark of 16.60m.
RETURNING CHAMPIONS
Although he is not returning this season, it was Chris Balthazar who made headlines at last year's Outdoor Heps. He was named Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer after sweeping both the 100m dash and 200m dash which included a meet and program record time of 20.41 seconds in the 200m. This resulted in him being named First Team All-Ivy in both events. Every Lions will look to follow in Balthazar's footsteps and have a big performance this weekend.
Earlier at this year, Columbia had a ton of success at Indoor Heps which could be an indicator of success to come at Outdoor Heps this weekend. Phoebe Anderson represented the women with a First Team All-Ivy selection in the 5,000m, after her dominant first-place finish in the event with an Ivy League Heps record time of 15:41.31.
Nikki Vanasse also received First Team All-Ivy recognition after becoming the second student-athlete in program history to win the gold medal in the women's mile run. She finished with a time 4:36.62 to win the event.
Elia Ton-That was the only Lion to garner All-Ivy honors in two different events. She was named Second Team All-Ivy in both the 5,000m run and 3,000m run, finishing in second place in both distance events.
Rory Clare, Talha Syed, and Obiora Okeke also each earned a silver medal at Indoor Heps.
