Women’s Soccer Rally Falls Short at No. 12 Penn State

Columbia battled until the end on the road against the Nittany Lions

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Columbia's Nata Ramirez scored in the 83rd minute to cut No. 12 Penn State's lead in half but it wasn't enough as the Lions came up just short in a tough road battle, 2-1 to the Nittany Lions on Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field.

Penn State tallied two goals in the first half of Sunday's contest. Jordan Fusco found the net in the 15th minute on an assist by Kaitlyn MacBean to give the Nittany Lions the early lead. Penn State doubled its lead to 2-0 later in the half when Mieke Schiemann capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity in the 37th minute.

Columbia locked down on defense in the second half to limit Penn State to just three shots. The Lions outshot the Nittany Lions, 5-3 in the second half and tallied six corner kicks. Overall, Penn State registered nine shots compared to Columbia's eight. The Lions managed multiple good looks at the goal with five total shots on goal. The Columbia defense limited Penn State to just two shots on goal.

As time was winding down in the game, Ramirez intercepted a pass from the Penn State goalkeeper. With the keeper out of position Ramirez quickly lined up and launched a shot right on target in the center of the net to put Columbia back in the game.

Less than seven minutes remained on the clock after Ramirez's goal as Columbia continued to pressure and look for opportunities to tie the game. Charlyse Berry took the final shot of the game with five seconds on the clock. The shot was right on target, but sailed just over the cross bar as Penn State was able to escape with the 2-1 victory.

Ramirez was credited with a team high two shots on goal in the game. Courtney Reudt, Gabby Chan and Berry each had one shot on goal. Lauren Rodriguez got the start in the net and played 45 minutes as she allowed both of Penn State's goals. Samantha Mahoney came in as the goalkeeper for the second half.
