Lions Take 4th at Navy’s “The Goat”

Lester, McGovern lead team performers for second straight weekend
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Columbia men's golf team earned fourth place at "The Goat" hosted by Navy. The two-day, 54-hole event took place Saturday and Sunday at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
Columbia was led for a second straight tournament by the play of first-year Grant Lester and senior Wyatt McGovern. Lester posted his second top-10 on the individual leaderboard in as many tournaments, tying for ninth at 1-over-par 214. The highlight of his weekend was an opening-round 5-under 66 where he carded six birdies and just one bogey. The rookie from Washington, D.C. had five more birdies during a second-round 73 and wrapped up his tournament with a 75.
Meanwhile, McGovern battled through four bogeys by carding two birdies and an eagle for an opening round even-par 71. He followed with four birdies and four bogeys in Round 2 to head into Sunday at even. McGovern posted four birdies, four bogeys and a double for a final-round 73, concluding the event in a tie for 12th at 2-over 215.
As a team, the Lions were 22-over-par for the weekend (287-287-300—874). Junior George Rubelsky boosted the team in Round 2 with a 1-under 70, tying for his collegiate-low round. Columbia was just two shots behind William & Mary for third and finished five shots clear of fifth-place Navy. Columbia also finished ahead of Maryland (+29) and Georgetown (+33).
The Lions host the Columbia Autumn Invitational next weekend, September 28-29, at Lake Placid Golf Club in Lake Placid, New York.
