NEW YORK — The Columbia men's golf team will host the Columbia Autumn Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, N.Y. The two-day, 54-hole event will be contested at the club's Links Course.
The tournament tees off with a shotgun start on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. The 11-team, 67-player field will play 36 continuous holes on Saturday, followed by the final 18 holes on Sunday.
Teams competing this weekend include the host Lions, Colgate, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Lemoyne, Monmouth, Niagara, Rider, STAC and Brown. Columbia's lineup for the team event will consist of Grant Lester, Wyatt McGovern, Salil Khanduja, George Rubelsky and William Sung. The Lions will also Hunter Po, Ryan Keyes and Darren Pang competing as individuals.
Columbia is the two-time reigning champion of the event, winning last year's edition by nine shots at 3-under-par 849. Nathan Han (-6) was runner-up and DJ Francey (+3) earned a top 10. George Rubelsky (+5) and William Sung (+6) finished inside the top 20. The team victory was Director of Golf Rich Mueller's 20th leading the Columbia men's golf program.
This year, Grant Lester and Wyatt McGovern have led Columbia through its first two tournaments of the fall season. Lester, a first-year, finished runner-up in his first collegiate tournament, The Doc Gimmler at Bethpage Red and Black. His opening 36 of 6-under-par 134 made him the fifth men's golfer in program history to post a 134 or better over 36 holes. He followed with a top 10 at The Goat last weekend, which was held at the Naval Academy Golf Course. Lester's 70.83 stroke average leads the team, just ahead of senior Wyatt McGovern at 71.17. McGovern was fourth at The Doc Gimmler and earned a tie for 12th at The Goat.
