NEW YORK – Columbia claimed four bout victories in Friday night's dual loss to Penn, highlighted by
Jack McGill's upset win over seventh-ranked Nick Incontrera at 174 pounds.
Penn secured wins in the final three bouts of the dual to outlast Columbia, 24-20 in the first Ivy League dual of the season. Columbia moves to 3-5 overall in duals this season with an 0-1 mark to start the Ivy slate.
The Quakers jumped out to a 12-0 advantage after the first three bouts of the night. Starting at 149, 17
th-ranked Cross Wasilewski took an 11-2 major decision against No. 33
Richard Fedalen. No. 21 Jude Swisher then posted an 18-1 tech fall over
Dominic Rossetti at 157. Andy Troczynski followed with a 15-11 decision win against
Jaden Le in the 165 bout.
McGill swung the momentum to Columbia's side by securing a top 10 victory over No. 7 Incontrera at 174 pounds. McGill used a takedown and near fall early in the first period to build an early lead. McGill added takedowns in the second and third periods to polish off a 14-3 major decision victory. McGill's win at 174 ignited a streak of four straight Columbia victories to help the Lions take the lead as a team heading into the final few bouts.
"We had some solid individual victories tonight that will help us as we move into championship season, but unfortunately we could not seal the deal for the team win," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzlaff said. "
Jack McGill was incredibly stingy and competed with power and confidence. We will turn the page and prepare for Sunday."
Nick Fine also earned an upset victory by pinning 18
th-ranked Maximus Hale at 184. Fine secured an impressive takedown and found himself in the perfect position to pin Hale in just 2:22.
Joe Curtis made it back-to-back pins for the Lions as he secured the win via fall over Nathan Taylor in 5:54.
Vincent Mueller secured Columbia's final victory of the match with an impressive 15-3 major decision against John Pardo at 285.
Penn capitalized in the lower weights to come back and escape with a 24-20 team victory. No. 26 Max Gallagher (125), No. 21 Ryan Miller (133) and No. 9 CJ Composto (141) secured wins in the final three bouts to help Penn earn the team victory.
