NEW YORK -- Brown scored with 20 seconds left to play to edge the Lions, 10-9, at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. It marked the third consecutive year Columbia lost to Brown by one on a goal in the final minute.
Marisa Marcellino evened the score when she struck on a shoulder-high shot from close range for a goal with 39 seconds left in the game. The goal, her third of the game, evened the score at 9-9.
The Lions had rallied from a two-goal deficit, 7-5, with less than 10 minutes to play. Marcellino scored unassisted at 49:09, then assisted a goal by first-year Holly Glynn at 51:10 to tie the score, 7-7. Rachael Ryan scored on a free position at 52:32, giving the Lions their first lead since late in the first half.
The lead did not last long, however, as the Bears continued to dominate the second-half draw controls, 10-2. Brown scored at 53:20 on a free position by Jen Redd, then took the lead when Bethany Buzzell scored her fourth goal 47 seconds later.
With two goals, Ryan was the only Lion other than Marcellino to have a multiple-goal afternoon. Kate Lombard had a goal, five ground balls and caused three turnovers.
While the goalies for both teams had a strong first half, including six saves by Marcela Calidonio in the first half, the Lions scored on their final six shots of the day and Brown scored on six of its final eight shots. The Bears (4-6, 1-1 Ivy League) were four-of-four on free-position shots.
