PHILADELPHIA – The Columbia women's volleyball team (4-10, 2-3 Ivy) rounded out its five-game conference road trip with a 3-1 win over Penn on Saturday night, snapping a three-game losing streak to return home with a victory.
The Lions came out dominating in the opening set, committing only two attacking errors for a .333 hitting percentage on their way to a 25-15 set-one victory. Trailing 8-4 early on in set, the Lions began to attack as they went on an 11-2 run to push out to a 15-10 advantage before sealing the set on a Sarah Gurbach ace.
With the second set tied at 9-9, the Lions started to rally once again with a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 16-11. The Quakers began to fight back all the way to a 23-22 game, but Bailey Springer was able to send home back-to-back kills to give the Lions a 25-22 set-two victory.
Penn came out attacking in the third set, however, jumping out to an 11-5 lead before the Lions were able to start rallying back. Trailing 18-11, Zoe Jacobs was able to slam home a kill that sparked a 6-2 run for the Lions, but the Quakers were able to take the set, 25-20.
Columbia wasted no time in the fourth set as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead early on, never surrendering the lead to seal the 3-1 victory with a 25-19 win.
Leading the way was Zoe Jacobs who posted up 17 kills and a pair of blocks while Bailey Springer added nine kills and Katarina Jovicic contributed with eight in the win. Jennifer Petrovich recorded yet another double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs on the night.
The Lions will return to action next weekend as they return home for Homecoming weekend, hosting Harvard on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. before the Homecoming match against Dartmouth on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m.
