NEW YORK - Behind a hat trick from sophomore Taylor Quinn, the Columbia women's lacrosse team grabbed its third straight victory Friday night with a 12-5 win over Wagner at Robert K. Kraft Field. The Lions used a dominant 14-5 draw control performance to key the win and improve to 3-5 on the season. Caroline Joy led the Lions with a game-high seven draw controls to go along with two scores on the day.
Columbia got goals from seven different players with Quinn scoring first, off the free-position at 26:21 to tie the game at 1-1. The Lions responded to a second Seahawks score with a run of three unanswered goals. Off the assist from Victoria Kalamaras, Joy fired in her first goal of the day at the 22:33 mark. Sarah Greenberg captalized off the free-position shot at 17:16 and Kalamras continued to show why she's the Lions assist leader with her ninth of the season to Quinn's goal at 15:50. Midway through the first half the Lions held a 4-2 lead.
Around three minutes later, Wagner cut the lead to one with a score at 12:30. Once again Columbia responded with another three-goal run to close the half and take a 7-3 lead at the break. Nell Crosby found the back of the net at 8:58, followed by Sara Ruzzi at 4:26. Quinn found a cutting Courtney Cliffe at 3:36 who finished with the score.
The Lions began the second period with a quick goal from Grennberg at 24:13, her second on the evening. Wagner quickly responded less than two minutes later with the Lions leading 8-4. At 18:43, Quinn recorder her fourth hat trick of the season with a goal. Katie Angulo gave the Lions a six-point cushion at 9:19 with a free-position score.
The Seahawks found the back of the net one last time at 8:30, but the Lions capped the game with a pair of goals to take the win, 12-5. Greenberg found Joy for the score at the 6:02 mark and Ruzzi fired a shot into the empty net off the free position at 5:08.
Columbia has now won three straight games with first-year Kelsey Gedin in goal. Gedin tallied 10 saves, forcing Wagner to 1-6 on free-position shot attempts.
