NEW YORK – After opening up Ivy League play this past weekend, the Columbia softball team will take a break from conference play in a doubleheader at Stony Brook on Tuesday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions earned their first conference win of the season last Friday, when Columbia topped Harvard in the second half of a home doubleheader.
Tessa Kroll earned the win in game two during a complete game shutout, surrendering just two hits in the contest.
Columbia broke a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the fourth inning, when Alix Cook came in on a Tonia Wu sac fly. The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth inning, when Wu scored on a Taylor Troutt double to center field, making it a 2-0 ballgame. Despite a leadoff walk for Harvard, Kroll was able to get out of the seventh when Troutt ended the game on a 4-3 double play.
The win came after a 3-2 loss in the game one, a contest that Columbia led up until the fifth inning.
Kerry Cook knocked in Alix Cook in the first inning on an RBI double to right center, putting the home team up, 1-0. Wu put up zeroes in the circle over the first four innings before Harvard was able to crack the scoreboard in the fifth. Giana Panariello touched them all with a solo shot to right, making it a 1-1 tie.
Harvard increased the lead to 3-1 in the top half of the sixth, adding two unearned runs in the inning. The Lions got one back in the bottom half, when Kerry Cook scored right before Wu was tagged out at second for the last out of the inning. Columbia was unable to add anything in the seventh, dropping the first game.
The following day against Dartmouth, pitcher Kristen Rumley helped the returning Ivy League champions to a two-game sweep of Columbia. Rumley posted two complete-game shutouts, surrendering just two hits in 12 innings.
The Lions now sit at 4-15 on the season, and 1-3 in the Ivy League.
