PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia baseball team bounced back from its game one defeat with a rousing 10-4 victory in game two over Princeton in a game that featured 24 hits between the teams.
Will Savage and Gus Craig each went 3-for-5 in the nightcap to help Columbia improve to 17-11 overall and 8-2 in Ivy League play.
Columbia took a little frustration from the first game into the start of the nightcap, scoring three times in the top of the first. Will Savage led things off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Robb Paller drove the first run in with a base-hit up the middle.
With two down, David Vandercook hit one into the jet-stream that was carrying to leftfield and tripled when leftfielder Paul Tupper could not get a beat on the fly ball. Two runs came in to extend the margin to 3-0.
Princeton got one back in the bottom of the first, using a single and double to cut the deficit to two before starting pitcher Adam Cline could record an out. However, the next three batters were retired in order to get out of the frame.
Jordan Serena used his speed to leg out a triple on a ball to right-center. After a walk to Paller, the Lions ran a play to manufacture the fourth run. Paller was thrown out trying to steal second, but Serena scored standing up to restore the three-run cushion.
The Lions added two more in the fourth when Nick Maguire hit a long double to the gap in right center to plate Randell Kanemaru. Columbia also caught another break when Will Savage forced an errant throw on a grounder to short to push the margin to 6-1.
Princeton got right back into it in the bottom of the stanza, getting two runs of its own. Nick Hernandez scorched a double to center and scored on a single to right by Tupper. Tupper moved all the way to third after Gus Craig allowed the ball to get by him and came in after a ground out.
However, Columbia grabbed the momentum back in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally. Logan Boyher reached on an infield single and Savage echoed the sentiment with his second hit of the game. Serena was next up and found a hole on the left side of the infield to bring in Boyher.
The Tigers took advantage of a pair of walks in the bottom half and Bryce Barr found himself in a bases loaded jam with just one out. Billy Arendt then sent a fly ball to Gus Craig in right, who came up firing and threw out the runner at the plate to keep Princeton off the board.
Craig led off the seventh inning with a triple to straightaway center and scored after an error by the Tigers' first baseman, extending the lead to 8-4. The Lions put the game away with two more in the eighth after a hit, three walks and a hit batter allowed runs to score.
Cline earned the victory to improve to 2-0 on the year. He allowed four runs on eight hits to go with seven strikeouts.
The Lions will wrap up their series with the Tigers with another twinbill beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 12.
