NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball team used a five-run third inning to pull away from Cornell and come up with a 10-2 win in game three of a four-game series. Joey Falcone and Gus Craig combined to go 5-for-7 with eight of the team's 10 RBI.
Falcone opened the scoring with a double in the first inning to bring in Robb Paller, who also had a pair of hits, to make it 1-0. Craig followed with a base-hit up the middle to add to the early lead.
The Big Red (9-24, 6-9) ended starting pitcher Kevin Roy's scoreless inning streak at 17.1 in the top of the second to cut the deficit in half.
However, the Lions (22-12, 13-2) put the hammer down in the third. An error and a gratuitous bounce on a popped up bunt put runners on first and second before a walk to Paller loaded the bases. Falcone dropped a single to rightfield to plate two runs and Craig roped a double down the line, making it 6-1. David Vandercook got in on the fun with a two-bagger of his own to add another insurance run.
The teams exchanged runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth before Falcone put the finishing touches on the win with a two-run blast in the bottom half of the sixth to extend the lead to 10-2.
Falcone finished up 3-for-4, while Craig was 2-for-3. Jordan Serena stole a pair of bases and was 2-for-4.
Roy picked up the win to improve to 4-2. He struck out seven and allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
