STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Columbia volleyball team (2-6) opened the second day of the Seawolves Invite presented by Holiday Inn Express in intense fashion on Saturday morning with a back-and-forth battle with Army, but unfortunately could not pull out a victory as it fell, 3-0, to the Black Knights.
The Black Knights were able to jump out to an early lead in set one but the consistent attack of the Columbia offense allowed the Lions to tie things up before eventually taking a 16-15 lead on a Bailey Springer kill. After Columbia was able to continue its attack to bring it to set point at 24-21, the Black Knights began a rally that tied things up before finishing their comeback to take set one, 29-27.
Unfortunately, Army was able to carry that momentum into the second set as well, taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 victory to head into the intermission.
The third set was much more of a back-and-forth battle between both teams, featuring six ties and four lead changes, and despite a late 5-2 run by the Lions, Army was able to pull away with a 25-20 victory to seal a 3-0 win in the Saturday morning matchup.
Columbia was led by freshman Luciana Del Valle who posted up 12 kills and six digs while Natasha Kosowicz fell one kills shy of a double-double after putting up nine kills and 10 digs on the day. Bailey Springer added eight kills for the Lions while Kesi Neblett posted four kills for a .429 attacking percentage.
The Lions will return to action later this afternoon as they round out the Seawolves Invite presented by Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook at 3:30 p.m.
