THE STORYLINES
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
Five players scored in double-figures as the Lions opened the 14-game tournament with a victory last weekend. Alex Rosenberg returned from a five-game absence and posted 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Jeff Coby recorded a double-double and Maodo Lo had a strong all-around game with 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.
CORNELL'S STATUS
The Big Red, playing without Ivy League leading scorer Robert Hatter, played an inspired game in Levien, but their comeback bid came up just short. Freshman Matt Morgan poured in 29 points to pick up conference Rookie of the Week honors.
Morgan averages 15.9 points behind Hatter's 19.9 scoring average. David Onuorah, who fouled out in 22 minutes of action last week, posted just two points and five rebounds.
SERIES HISTORY
Columbia leads the all-time series 126-98, dating back to 1902-03. The teams have split the home-and-home set in three of the last four years. The Lions earned a sweep of the Big Red in 2013-14.
HERE COME THE REINFORCEMENTS
Senior Alex Rosenberg returned against Cornell on Jan. 16 after missing five games due to injury. Lukas Meisner, who missed the Central Penn game, also logged five minutes. Senior Isaac Cohen was medically cleared to play (knee) last weekend, but did not see action.
JAZZY JEFF
Junior Jeff Coby has provided a huge lift off the bench during the Lions' three-game winning streak, averaging 14.7 points and 10 rebounds during that stretch. Coby posted career-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds against Central Penn and opened Ivy League play with another double-double against Cornell on Jan. 16 (13 points, 11 rebounds). He is the first Columbia player to record back-to-back double-doubles since Mark Cisco did so in three consecutive games in January 2012.
DOUBLE (DOUBLE) THE FUN
After registering just one double-double all of 2014-15 (Jeff Coby vs. Lehigh), Columbia has four this season. Alex Rosenberg notched 10 points and 10 boards in the season opener against Kean, Luke Petrasek accomplished the feat with 16 points and 11 rebounds against Howard, while Jeff Coby posted back-to-back double-doubles against Central Penn (20 points,13 boards) and Cornell (13 points, 11 rebounds).
