JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – John Kinne played the role of hero once again, driving in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning, to give Columbia a 5-4 victory over Jacksonville. The win gave the Lions (2-2) a series split against the Dolphins (6-3).
Shane Adams began the 11th inning with a single and was sacrificed to second. Will Savage drew a walk to bring up Kinne, who dropped a single just fair down the leftfield line to bring in Adams.
Harrisen Egly came on in the bottom of the frame and worked around a two-out walk and single to earn his sixth career save to put him in a three-way tie for second on Columbia's career list.
Thomas Crispi pitched four innings of one-hit ball to earn the decision in his first appearance since the 2014 NCAA Regional after missing last year due to injury.
Savage went 3-for-4 and finished the weekend with a .529 batting average. Robb Paller was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Engel had a 2-for-4 day from the dish.
Savage started the game with a single and Kinne was beaned to set the table for Paller with no outs. Paller delivered a double to knock in the first run of the day and ground out plated Kinne. With one out, Kanemaru flied out deep enough to give Simpson a three-run cushion before taking the mound.
However, the Dolphins did not let the lead stick for long. A two-run homer by Austin Hays and JJ Gould drove in the game-tying run in the bottom half of the frame.
Jacksonville took advantage of some miscues in the bottom of the seventh to take its first lead of the day. A hit batter and sacrifice bunt began the inning and Franco Guardascione hit a grounder that was bobbled by Engel, who was looking to make a play at third, to put runners on the corners. With the Dolphins showing squeeze, a wild pitch brought in the go-ahead run.
Down to their final at-bats for the second consecutive day, the Lions rallied again in the top of the ninth to extend the game.
Engel singled and went to second on a ground out. Paller went opposite-field and flared a single to left to knot the score, 4-4.
The Lions will begin a 10-game spring break trip on the West Coast on Friday, March 11, at Pepperdine to start a four-game series with the Tides. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
