Cornell Rallies Twice to Earn Series Win Over Baseball

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell came from behind twice to earn a series win over the Columbia baseball team. The Lions fell in game one, 7-4, and were edged in the nightcap, 4-3.
Will Savage stirred things up again in the top of the first inning, reaching on an infield single, stealing second and scoring on base-hit from Randell Kanemaru.
Cornell erased the deficit with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fourth, using a three-run homer from Frankie Padulo to jump in front, 3-1. However, the Lions answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead.
With one out, Nick Maguire notched a single and Logan Boyher drew a walk. After a pitching change, Kyle Bartelman found some room through the right side to cut the deficit to one. John Kinne followed with a single to knot things at 3-3. A walk to Lane Robinette loaded the bases and another base on balls to Savage gave Columbia the lead back, 4-3.
The Big Red regained the momentum in the bottom of the frame, using a Cole Rutherford double to even the score with no outs in the fifth. With runners on the corners, Mark Fraser single to plate the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, a balk allowed an insurance run to cross from third. Rutherford made it 7-4 with a double in the sixth.
Josh Simpson fell to 1-3 after tossing four innings, allowing six runs on six hits. He struck out five in the defeat.

The Lions scored three times in the first inning and held a 3-1 lead until the Big Red rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good.
Savage started things off with a double and after John Kinne reached via fielder's choice. Robb Paller followed with a single to bring in Savage and Kanemaru doubled to bring in two more runs.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the fourth when Jordan Winawer scored Fraser with a sac fly.
Cornell did all of its damage with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. A hit batter started the rally and Fraser found the gap in left-center to make it 3-2. Rutherford followed with another two-bagger, tying the score, and Dale Wickham posted the game-winning hit with a single to center.
Columbia had a chance to comeback in the top of the eighth, putting runners on first and second with two outs. However, reliever Jamie Smith got Maguire to line out to end the frame.
Ethan Abrams pitched five innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits. Willis Robbins earned the decision after working 0.2 of the seventh inning.
The Lions will return to Robertson Field at Satow Stadium for a non-conference tilt with Fordham on Wednesday, April 20. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. on the Ivy League Digital Network.
